We all  want a better memory!

Can't remember if you locked the door or not? This is not a sign of poor memory. There is so much on our minds these days that routine actions are performed unconsciously while our minds are elsewhere..

You are therefore not consciously carrying out the action and so when you are walking away from your house you think: "Have I locked the door or not?" And you go back to check it. What is memory?

Memory is our ability to store information and experiences from the past in our human brain and retrieve this when we need to.

Memory gives us the ability to learn by applying stored information. For example, without memory, you would keep burning your fingers on a pan that was too hot. Your memory is preventing that.

Memory and learning are two different things. Learning is the process by which we acquire knowledge of the world and process this into useful information. This allows us to adapt our behaviour when needed. 

During the process of learning, new neurons are created in the brain that later serve a purpose. For example, we learn a new language by studying words, phrases and grammar, but the moment we don't have our textbooks ready, we dig into our memory to put into practice what we have learned.

What is memory?

Memory is the brain's helper. Memory allows the brain to encode, store and retrieve information in three different ways. We distinguish:

  1. Sensory memory: Stimuli we process immediately and is usually held in the brain for less than a second.
  2. Short-term memory:.The information is then transferred to our short-term memory (working memory). Then we can think over current issues at hand and hold important information in our minds.
  3. Long-term memory: Finally, we store events and patterns we have learned in our long-term memory. /li>


Vessels and brain

In an interview on NPO1 on di 27 October 2020, neuropsychologist Erik Scherder( known from TV) and cardiologist Leonard Hofstra talk about their book "Heart for your Brain". Once again, both gentlemen emphasise why exercise is so important. The common thread is 'nitric oxide', a body's own wonder drug produced by excercising. And it is never too late to start exercising more.

"You make your own super medicine, a substance that, as a cardiologist, I cannot prescribe" says Leonard Hofstra.

"Once you exercise, the production of nitric oxide causes vasodilation which is good for blood flow in the heart vessels but also for the vessels in the brain," says Eric Scherder. Besides vasodilation, other important positive effects due to nitric oxide include:

  • Platelet clumping is prevented.
  • Bad cholesterol does not get worse.
  • Inflammatory substances cannot adhere to the vessel wall

Exercise does not necessarily have to be running, walking is also fine according to Eric Scherder. A positive effect occurs after at least half an hour a day of continuous walking. The substances that cause vasodilatation need time to get going. If you walk less than thirty minutes, the positive effect is less.
